Year 1's Dynamic Learning Journey
Mr Rikki Elks
Year 1 Teacher
In Year 1, the children have the fortunate opportunity to benefit from a unique hybrid curriculum. The children continue to develop their discovery-based learning skills through continuous provision. They are immersed in a bilingual setting featuring a blend of learning goals based on the UK curriculum and the Chinese curriculum. Furthermore, they are provided with more structured learning opportunities – supporting them to develop their critical thinking and preparing them for Year 2.
Our Learning Environment
Year 1’s unique and effective learning approach is made possible with a passionate team of educational professionals who constantly evaluate and improve the learning environment. An inclusive, stimulating, and language-rich learning environment can have a significant impact on the independence, resilience, and creativity of Year 1 children. An inclusive environment ensures that all children feel valued and supported, which promotes a positive attitude towards learning. A stimulating environment provides children with a range of experiences and challenges, which encourages them to take risks and develop their problem-solving skills. A language-rich environment exposes children to a variety of vocabulary, which enhances their communication skills and ability to express themselves. By providing such an environment, children are better equipped to develop their independence, resilience, and creativity, as they feel confident and motivated to explore and learn.
A Bilingual Blended Curriculum
A blended UK and Chinese curriculum combine the best of both worlds, providing children with a unique and enriching learning experience. Children learn within a multicultural environment, gaining an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and ways of thinking. The curriculum is designed to develop a range of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. The UK curriculum provides a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy, while the Chinese curriculum focuses on developing language skills and cultural knowledge. Together, these curricula provide a comprehensive and well-rounded education that prepares children for success in a globalized world.
Learning Through Discovery
Discovery learning is a child-centred approach that encourages children to explore and learn through hands-on experiences. It allows children to take an active role in their learning, fostering a sense of curiosity and creativity. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, and test their ideas through trial and error. This approach helps children develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. By engaging in discovery learning, children are able to make connections between different concepts and apply their knowledge in real-world situations. This approach encourages children to become lifelong learners, who are motivated to seek out new knowledge and experiences.
Preparation for Year 2
Year 1 is a crucial year in a child's academic journey, as it prepares them for the challenges of Year 2. In Year 1, children develop a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in literacy, numeracy, and many other topics. They learn to work independently, take responsibility for their learning, and demonstrate a greater depth of understanding. These skills and knowledge are essential for success in Year 2, where the curriculum becomes more challenging, and the expectations increase. By building a solid foundation in Year 1, children are better equipped to meet the demands of Year 2 and beyond.
