Into the Classroom | Pre-Nursery’s Material Discovery

17 Apr 2024

Recently, our pre-nursery class embarked on an educational adventure titled "A Journey through Materials." This theme is designed to engage our youngest learners in exploring the textures, properties, and uses of different materials that we encounter in our daily lives.

The journey was initiated with the wonderful story of "Not A Stick" by Antoinette Portis, which became the foundation of our theme. This delightful tale challenges little minds to look beyond the ordinary and imagine the extraordinary, transforming a simple stick into a myriad of magical possibilities. It's a celebration of imagination and creativity, encouraging children to think outside the box and see the potential in everyday items.

In our science exploration, pupils experienced the wonder of growth and life as they planted beans in plastic cups. They eagerly monitored their beans each day, learning about the conditions that plants need to thrive, and looking forward for the first sprouts.

Art took a naturalistic turn as we provided sticks for the children to use as painting tools. This activity not only supported the development of their fine motor skills but also allowed them to see how different materials and techniques can create varying textures and patterns on their paper canvases.

The mystery box was a highlight, introducing atactile "Touch and Feel" experience. With each object they touched, the children engaged their sense of touch and descriptive language skills to articulate how each object felt, fostering cognitive and sensory development.

Outdoor activities complemented our exploration and tied into the current Vernal Equinox Solar Term, a period that heralds the arrival of spring according to the 24 solar terms. Further fostering a sense of responsibility and care, our young gardeners were given the chance to nurture the wheat sprouts inour garden. This daily act of caring reinforced the life cycle concepts and it has contributed to a deeper understanding of Vernal Equinox Solar Term.

In the sand area, imaginative play was in fullswing as the children cooked an imaginary "spring soup," mixing sand with various found materials. This free play encouraged cooperation,role-playing, and creativity. The water area was transformed into a little lemonade stand where the children mixed lemon and orange slices with water, engaging in sensory play while simulating real-life scenarios of making and sharing lemonade.

Through these interactive and multi-sensory experiences, our pre-nursery class not only learned about materials and their properties but also developed critical thinking, social-emotional skills, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Our journey through materials has just begun, and we're brimming with excitement for the many wonders and happy learning moments yet to come.
