Into the Classroom | Exploring 24 Solar Terms
This year in Nursery, we are exploring 24 solar terms. Through the 24-solar term curriculum, the children will learn about the different seasons and Chinese culture.
At the start of this term, we observed‘White Dew’. The children learned that the temperature was beginning to drop and that white dew would be more visible in the mornings. The children represented their learning by creating art pieces – using their fingertips to paint dew drops on leaves.
The ‘Autumn Equinox’ was observed by learning about the sun and moon. The children created paper circles – they decorated half to represent the sun and half to represent the moon. Their artwork demonstrated their understanding that the day and night were the same length during this period of the year.
We had fun celebrating the‘Mid-Autumn Festival’. Children and adults came to school in traditional dress style. This helped us to feel part of a community and reflect on different aspects of Chinese culture. We joined the whole school during a parade to show their traditional clothes. The children felt proud of their clothes and were happy to talk about them. Next, they used play dough to practice making moon cakes. Then, they used their learned skills to prepare real moon cakes which they were able to take home and share with their family.
Recently we have been exploring ‘Cold Dew’. The children have learned that the cold season has begun and how the colder temperatures affect the environment. Throughout October, the children observed the leaves changing colour and slowly dropping to the floor. We went on a learning walk to explore the college grounds.
During our exploration, the children identified and gathered fallen leaves of different shapes, sizes and colours. The children used these leaves to create natural artwork – making pictures by sticking the leaves onto paper.
We will continue to learn about autumn by observing ‘Frost's Descent’. The children will learn that dew will become frost because the temperature will be much lower. The children will experiment with making and melting ice to reflect their understanding.
