Our new vision for the future: Be You. Be More.

02 Sep 2023

Wellington College China has now proudly entered its second decade since its opening. Over these past years, we have witnessed remarkable expansion, widening our reach from Tianjin to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nantong. Impressively, many pupils from our schools have grown up to become accomplished adults, securing places at esteemed institutions of higher learning. Throughout this time, we have committed to become one of the most distinguished international schools of the century, whilst laying down the groundwork for our unique educational philosophy. As we forge ahead into the next decade, our teams across the Wellington College China family of schools have been engaging all members of our community for invaluable input and advice. Together, we have seized the opportunity to reflect on our past achievements and experiences, revisit our core values and educational principles and envision a promising future for our pupils.

We want to empower our pupils to ‘Be You. Be More.’ With this fresh vision, we want our children to realise the best version of themselves, to take pride in where they come from, and to be the change they wish to see in the world — to be Learners, Connectors and Changemakers.

We are Learners

with the passion, intrinsic motivation and critical thinking that empowers us to take on real-world challenges.

We deliver pioneering education to help serve and shape a better world. We combine the very best of Chinese, British and international education models to create a pupil-centred, multilingual, multicultural and inclusive learning experience. We champion the individualised development of each pupil, encouraging them to take an active, spontaneous and independent role in their learning. By doing so, we imbue our pupils with the drive to take charge of their learning.

Our family of schools stays up to date with the latest educational concepts and practices from both within China and overseas. Our classrooms are lively and engaging, with language lessons often taking the form of stage performances, biology lessons sometimes becoming adventures in nature, and physical education lessons evolving into full-on decathlons. We do not constrain ourselves to fixed forms or subjects but instead pursue a comprehensive and diverse approach to teaching. We believe that teachers and pupils should freely and equitably co-create their learning experiences, and we encourage pupils to ask questions while teachers embrace these challenges. By nurturing an environment of mutual inspiration, pupils can immerse themselves in the stimulating influence of our remarkable teaching staff. We believe that pupils understand that learning is an enlightening experience, driven by personal interests and sustained by a desire for knowledge and intrinsic motivation. Only when the thirst for knowledge originates from the heart can it truly serve us in the pursuit of our highest aspirations.

We are Connectors

with the confidence, openness and empathy to bridge cultural chasms and bring our world closer together.

With the increasing pace of globalisation, it is apparent that future global citizens will encounter a society that is both diverse and interconnected. When our pupils graduate, we want them to engage with the world, facilitate communication between diverse cultures and worldviews, bridge cultures and promote harmony and shared prosperity. We are a vibrant and multicultural community, consisting of pupils, parents and staff from diverse backgrounds. With sister schools in the UK, Thailand and India, we respect and value every culture, constantly seeking to learn from the richness and uniqueness each one offers.

Every year, our schools organise a variety of enriching events, like the International Food Festival, Traditional Culture Day and cross-school summer camps. Our teaching teams facilitate cross-school and international exchanges that spur mutual growth. With the generous support of the Friends of Wellington (FOW) and Friends of Huili (FOH), our schools can engage and collaborate with the wider community, offering our pupils a wealth of diverse cultural experiences, social practices and career development opportunities.

We are Changemakers

with the knowledge, networks and commitment to better serve our community and make a positive impact on the future.

At Wellington College China, we encourage pupils, parents, faculty and staff to participate in community activities and be attentive to the needs of those around us. By engaging in real-world challenges, we deepen our understanding of multi-faceted social issues and seek practical solutions. We recognise that every member of our community is an indispensable and essential force, and when we unite our efforts, the light that we collectively give out can bring hope to many.

Whether through music concerts, charity runs, volunteering at local animal shelters, or raising funds for global causes, Wellingtonians are encouraged to be active members of their local and global communities. As part of our curriculum, pupils also have opportunities to engage in social entrepreneurship projects that allow them to develop practical skills while making a positive impact on their communities.

By fostering a mindset of continuous learning, promoting global connection, and empowering our pupils to be changemakers, we believe that Wellington College China will continue to thrive and grow in the coming decade. We are excited for the journey ahead and look forward to seeing our Wellingtonians shine brightly, embodying the spirit of ‘Be You. Be More.’
