About the Story
The story is most suitable for children up to the age of 5. It is about a little rhino called Archie who asks questions about absolutely everything he sees. "Why does toast make crumbs?" "Why are there so many bubbles?" "Why do dropped things go smash?" Exhausted by all of his questions, Mummy and Daddy decide that Archie might enjoy going to the museum, but this led to even more questions than ever!
As adults, we know that the first such statement from a little child is the emphatic ‘no!’ which our children so brilliantly master very early in life. The very next step in their development is curiosity, the ‘what if’ and ‘why?’ actions and speech which they will use to try to make sense of the world around them.
One of the reasons why this story is so wonderful to read out loud to children is that the language is very relatableand and many of the questions are answered with words allowing us to hear the sound, such as smash or splashy. It's also very funny, something which always pulls a child into a story and the illustrations so beautifully tell the story to those little readers looking for details.
I think that my ultimate favourite thing about this book is that the humour is also aimed at adults and there is a subplot which only we could understand, such as when Archie points straight at a stranger and asks‘Why is her nose so long?’, or the parent's relief when he finally falls asleep and the questions stop for a blissful sleep break or when he wakes them up just after 5am in the morning with a question.
This deceptively simple little story holds so much humour and enjoyment for all. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
