About the Story
The key theme of this story is friendship. This helps children to develop important life skills like getting along with other people, creating a sense of belonging and security and being able to sort out conflicts and problems at a very tender age. Children with these skills are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties as they grow older.
This story is relevant to children aged between 2 to 6 who can listen to and comprehend stories in both English and Mandarin languages. The teachers are‘bouncing’around the concepts of the story to promote a very engaging approach to bilingual story telling which is modelled to encourage children to easily follow it without over-reliance on direct translation.
In the story, picture cues and familiar fruits are referenced to represent different colours, hence making it easier for children to relate with, remember, retell and sequence the story. However, each colour depicts itself as more superior than the other, but upon coming together they formed a very beautiful rainbow. The moral of the story is that we may have our own different personalities, preferences and characters, but when we join our hands together in friendship, we form beautiful relationships. When children establish strong friendships, they have higher self-esteem and are better able to focus on doing well in school without feeling sad and lonely.
