A Triumphant Return for Our Children
How wonderful to hear children’s voices in the classroom and corridors of the Nest. The return of the children to school on Wednesday 23rd February saw our learning environment come back to life. Children were excited to see their friends and teachers. There was a lot of discussion about what they had done with their families during our prolonged closure period.
The morning was cold, but the staff on gate duty were so happy to see children arriving with their grown-ups, they didn’t feel the cold. Children went in to see the nurse with big smiles. The adults also had big smiles. We even saw a few adults skip away from school joyous that online learning had ended!
As the children entered the building, they were met by a large picture backdrop showing Welly, our new mascot. Many of the children posed for photographs, but most rushed to get to their classroom. Staff members were on hand to welcome them back with big smiles and happy greetings.
The children very quickly settled back into their school routine. Children like routine as they find it easier to navigate their way through busy school days when they know what to expect and when. The children were excited to get into the outdoor learning areas and play, explore and learn with friends. They quickly got on with activities and worked together to solve problems.
At lunchtime, the children enjoyed their first school lunch in more than six weeks. A child in Eaglets was heard saying how lunch was their favourite thing. For year one lunch was different. As part of the transition for children to develop independence, our multi-function room now has new movable tables and new crockery. The year one children now have plates and can serve their own food. They feel very grown-up being able to eat this way. One child said it was like being in a restaurant in school. They will do this until the summer term, when they eat in the main school building. Then it will be the reception classes who get to eat together.
The children were more than ready for their nap time! Even the children in year one fell asleep following such a busy return to school. The afternoon was full of activity until the end of the day when all the children settled to listen to stories and to join in with familiar class songs.
What a wonderful start to school for all the children. I am sure many of them slept well on Wednesday night. It is great to be back!
