Into the Classroom | Exploring Outer Space in the Nest
Last term in Nursery and Reception our theme of ‘Space’ definitely stretched the imagination and creativity of our children in so many ways while emphasising the interesting and significant job that astronauts do. This was evident in the way that the children were actively engaged in role-playing astronauts to an extent that at the end of the topic, all of them were so excited and inspired to be astronauts in the future.
There was a range of activities that the nursery children involved themselves in to explore this wonderful, yet sometimes abstract, topic. The culmination of this was the creation of a model of planet earth. Through this activity the children put into practice their collaboration and independent learning skills, linking previous learning with their own real-life experiences to create the model. For example, using the right colours to represent land, vegetation, water and polar regions. There was also the advantage of children widening their vocabulary of shapes and space. The concept of recycling and caring for planet earth and making it a safe place to live in was also explored in this topic.
In Reception, the children moved beyond planet Earth and looked at the other planets that make up our solar system. They created a model solar system and enjoyed getting creative as they painted the planets. They had the opportunity to see short videos made by Chinese astronauts from a previous space flight and heard from real astronauts how they do simple tasks like drink water in zero gravity. We also looked at the first Chinese woman who went into space. It has shown the children that men and women can follow the same path and realise their dream to have a career in space travel. This has been an exciting theme for the children to investigate.
